Notes:
Following the UK premiere of series 2 of The Gold on BBC One on Sunday 8th June and to coincide with the release, the original television soundtrack, composed and performed by Simon Goff, is now available on all digital music platforms via Silva Screen Records. A vinyl release is planned for July 2025.
The Bafta Nominated Series is from award-winning writer Neil Forsyth (Guilt, Eric, Ernie & Me) and is produced by Tannadice Pictures, in association with All3Media International, for the BBC. The first series of The Gold aired in February 2023 with 8.7 million viewers for episode one. The Gold is inspired by the true story and theories of the 1983 Brink’s-Mat robbery, which saw the theft of £26 million worth of gold bullion, and the decades-long chain of events that followed. Series two is inspired by some of the theories around what happened to the other half.
Of the soundtrack, Goff says, “In series one of The Gold, the score developed around using the sound pallets of strings and electronics, acting themselves as characters in the narrative. The subject of class permeates the whole story and we used these sound worlds to represent two worlds, divided at first but becoming more and more intertwined as the series progressed. The ways in which the worlds have collided and merged in series two is even more complex. The tension is even higher and the neurosis that torments the characters runs deeper. Just as series two takes us to new corners of the world, seeing how the gold and its legacy spread, the score for series two sits as a partner in this development, building on the atmospheres and themes of series one and taking them to deeper and more intense places.”
Simon Goff is a Grammy Award-winning British composer, producer, and violinist based in Berlin. His work sits at the intersection of contemporary classical, electronic, and cinematic music, shaped by a rigorous classical training and a commitment to sonic innovation. His albums Vale and Spark Like Living Mothers have received critical acclaim for their immersive, textural soundscapes and compositional depth. He has also worked with some of the world’s most acclaimed musicians as a collaborator and a sound engineer including Academy Award-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir on Joker and Chernobyl – both of which earned him Grammy Awards, as well as Jóhann Jóhannsson and Apparat among many others.
Goff is equally recognised for his work in film and television, including the BAFTA-nominated BBC drama series The Gold and the award-winning Czech features VLNY and We Have Never Been Modern. A distinguished live performer, he has appeared at leading venues and festivals such as the Institute of Contemporary Arts and Union Chapel in London, and CTM Festival in Berlin.
