Notes:
Later this year, Jon Jones' admirable Love Universal label will release a brand-new album from Yankari Afrobeat Collective, an Ireland-based band whose sole commercially available release single dropped on the tiny Hip Dip label way back in 2015. To get us all in the mood, Jones has decided to deliver an ultra-limited, single-sided 12-inch featuring an extended rework of album track 'Enyimba' by Irish producer Frawl. Leaning into the band's Fela Kuti/Tony Allen influences, the revision offers a slightly deeper, groove-based perspective - all crispy polyrhythmic drums, jaunty bass guitar, sustained synth and organ chords, flanged guitar licks, delay-laden beat-free breakdowns and the group's hybrid Nigerian/English vocals. It's a mesmerising rework that simmers away before building to a celebratory conclusion.
