If you want to spare your blushes by owning more shoegaze than My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive and Ride - or any other artist you might find in the shoegaze starter packs - then Chapterhouse is a great place to start and indicative of the discovery of a real crate digger. The Reading band did well with their first album Whirlpool, originally released in 1991 and landing a respectable 23 in the UK album charts. That same year they played just before Nirvana at Reading Festival, back when it was less of a one-stop shop for every genre and had a real impact on rock music. One of the potential hurdles in translating why a band won the hearts of so many in the early 90s is the poor quality audio you might find online but with an audiophile representation now available on vinyl, the true magic of Chapterhouse has never been clearer to find for future generations.
