Candi Staton's 'When You Wake Up Tomorrow' lands in 1979 during her brief but telling pivot into disco under Jimmy Simpson, issued via Warner Bros. as both 7" and club-ready 12". By this point, Staton had already cut through with southern soul sides and the crossover hit 'Young Hearts Run Free', but her Warner period - including the A La Carte LP - places her inside a late-70s New York studio system shaped by extended mixes and dancefloor readies. The 12" version of stretches the title number to nearly seven minutes (for as long as DJs need to beatmatch, demand for extended mixes will remain). Here, long-form devotional housemaster Joe Caussell provides a beefed-up house version, with a highly cleaned-up but still raw-feeling sound, bringing out the broken, dreadfully loving angst in Staton's voice.
